Spring Cleaning!

Closets and drawers are often where " Ill be over in 10 min" items perish along with storing your every day items like purses and coats. Our drawers and closets become a lasagna of junk- layering "ill just put this here for now" items on top of one another until the space is filled and then never opened again for fear of an avalanche or explosion!

Why do so few people take the time to organize the chaos? Having purchased, renovated and moved into a new home over the past 5 months chaos has been an understatement and THIS gal has had enough! Its time to start having our house work for us! (Its the least it can do considering we pay for it every month)

Like most of you- our closets and drawers are the hardest working parts of our home. In the new house we have 2 closets for the ENTIER HOUSE outside of the bedroom closets. .  2 FOLKS! We also have an open concept house with few walls to hide the junk- so we're having to get extra creative with our furniture pieces!

Here is a list of 5 RULES we established in our organizing journey (and it is a journey!) to make your home function better for you!

1. If you don't love it or it hasn't been used in the last 2 years. . . GET RID OF IT!  I give you permission to get rid of that old handbag or mismatched set of dishes.

2. Set your house up based on how YOUR FAMILY lives!
What items are you always picking up after or frequently losing? Chances are they don't have a permanent home. If you always come in the front door- then place a tray on your entry table to collect your wallet, keys etc and a hang a hook for your jacket and bags.

3. Every item has a home! Labels and baskets will be a big help here. Approach your organizing the same way you would looking for food in your fridge. If you cant quickly spot or see the label to read it- chances are you'll forget its there.

4. Space is always at a premium- Group like items together. There is no sense in having papers stored in 4 different spots around the house. How could you find what your looking for?  Consider setting up a basket on or under your entry table to organize mail along with a shredder to dispose and protect your identity

5. Revisit rules 1-4 often! Our lives are constantly changing, as will your organizational needs. Its not uncommon to "reorganize" a space 3-4 times before you get it right.  My rule of thumb is- if I keep finding items outside of their pre-established home- that systems isn't working for us and needs reorganized.

Over the next few days ill be posting pictures of our organizational journey and how we executed the 5 rules!

Its a game changer not having to dedicate so much of my time to picking up day to day items. I cant tell you how amazing it feels knowing that every member of our house knows exactly where to find something and where to lives it when finished!
